What Do We Train?
How About Kids?
Tots Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (ages 3-5):
Looking for an activity to introduce to your child? Our Tots BJJ class is an excellent introduction to martial arts for kids ages 3-5. These classes are safe, fun, and high energy! Your child will practice different rolls, learn how to fall safely, and begin building coordination and movement skills during training. They will socialize with other kids, gain focus, and learn the positions of Jiu Jitsu through exciting games and drills!
Junior Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (ages 6-10):
Our Junior Kids BJJ program focuses on the basic fundamentals of the gentle art, and will build a strong foundation for grappling. Our instructors instill respect, listening skills, and discipline into our students. We ensure a safe and friendly learning environment, while providing encouragement and support through hands-on coaching. Students will learn takedowns, submission holds, and the self defense concepts within Jiu Jitsu. We also begin to introduce BJJ competition in our Junior Kids program.
Senior Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (ages 11-14):
Our Senior Kid’s BJJ program focuses on providing the tools to become not only effective martial artists, but disciplined students capable of making good choices both on and off the mats. These students gain knowledge of body mechanics, anti-bullying strategies, mental toughness, courage, and problem solving skills that translate to every day life. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also teaches kids about setting goals and achieving them through hard work. They will have lots of fun while training a safe and realistic martial art with other kids. When they are ready, we encourage competition to challenge our students and celebrate facing adversity.
What Do People Say About Us?
We struggled to find a sport my son enjoys until we were introduced to Matt at On Guard. Now every week my son looks forward to getting on the mat. He is actually bummed when he may have to miss a class. Matt is patient and kind with the kids. He helps them to feel confident and comfortable in what they are doing. Highly recommend On Guard.
Professor Matt Kwan is one of the most knowledgable instructors I have come across during my almost 12 years in Jiu Jitsu. His attention to detail and ability to help students absorb those details is impressive. I highly recommend him to anyone at any experience level.
Some of the best instruction you can get in all of BC, from an instructor with a wealth of competition experience. What makes Matt special is not only his in depth understanding of jiu jitsu and grappling in general, but his ability to articulate that understanding in his teaching. The gym has a welcoming and friendly vibe that is perfect for the absolute beginner or seasoned jiu jitsu player. 10/10 would recommend.
Matt is an amazing instructor. My son is in the kids' class and I am always amazed at the development of his skills. Matt builds meaningful connections with each child; my son loves it here!
OnGuard BJJ is an incredible, intelligent jiu jitsu school. The concepts and instruction that you will receive from Matt and Mike are impeccable and from top notch quality. I promise you that every visit will strengthen your game, show you details that you missed before and make you wanna go back for more. On top of that they have surrounded themselves with some excellent people; always inviting, always ready to roll. You simply have to visit them when your in the Pitt Meadows area. If you don’t, it’s a guarantee your missing out.
